Review: Destruction by Sharon Bayliss

This week's review isn't actually the book I read this weekend, but one I read while on the way to Las Vegas. I have to say, I missed a lot of beautiful scenery because this book kept me enthralled and turning every page anxiously. Worth. It. Let me fill you in on why you want to read this book!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Introducing a new dark wizard family drama, Destruction by Sharon Bayliss, Book One in The December People Series.

David Vandergraff wants to be a good man. He goes to church every Sunday, keeps his lawn trim and green, and loves his wife and kids more than anything. Unfortunately, being a dark wizard isn't a choice.

Eleven years ago, David's secret second family went missing. When his two lost children are finally found, he learns they suffered years of unthinkable abuse. Ready to make things right, David brings the kids home even though it could mean losing the wife he can’t imagine living without.

Keeping his life together becomes harder when the new children claim to be dark wizards. David believes they use this fantasy to cope with their trauma. Until, David's wife admits a secret of her own—she is a dark wizard too, as is David, and all of their children.

Now, David must parent two hurting children from a dark world he doesn’t understand and keep his family from falling apart. All while dealing with the realization that everyone he loves, including himself, may be evil.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sharon Bayliss is the author of The December People Series and The Charge. When she’s not writing, she enjoys living happily-ever-after with her husband and two young sons. She can be found eating Tex-Mex on patios, wearing flip-flops, and playing in the mud (which she calls gardening). She only practices magic in emergencies.

MY REVIEW
Five out of Five Stargates--Out of This World!
I received an ARC for this book in exchange for an honest review. In short: I loved it.

This book is a whirlwind of emotions right from the start, and continues to build intensity with each chapter. The story starts with a bang as David Vandergraff gets the phone call he has been waiting for and dreading for eleven years--the call that tells him what happened to his missing children.

His secret missing children that his wife knows nothing about.

His secret missing children that also happen to be wizards.

As David's world begins to unravel, he discovers that he wasn't the only one in his marriage with secrets. His wife Amanda has her fair share as well. And not just that she is also a dark wizard.

This book might have wizards and magic, but the story is in this family and the problems they have, which are very rooted in reality. Their disfunction makes them feel so normal, but when you add magic to the mix, disfunction doesn't cover it. The characters are beautifully flawed, and sometimes do unforgivable things, but you still find yourself rooting for them. The Vandergraff kids aren't just accessories to David and Amanda's story, but are integral parts of the whole, and have their own enriching plots that will tug at your heart. The demons they are all facing are more within themselves than some evil wizard out to get them. They are their own villains, which makes the face off with the real villain so much more intense. Even if they win, will they truly win? Or will they be their own defeat?

Right when the plot heads in one direction, Sharon Bayliss throws you for a loop. Predictable is not in her vocabulary, that's for sure. Definitely a must read, and can't wait for more.

Weekend Wrap Up: Review of Divide by Jessa Russo

There aren't enough stars to give this book. Just be warned of that, because this is totally going to be a gush fest. In fact, I'm going to preface this review by urging you to go buy the book. Now. So we can talk about it and gush together.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Amazon  Kobo  Goodreads

From senior class president to dejected social outcast, with just the flick of a match.

After accusations of torching her ex-boyfriend’s home are followed by the mysterious poisoning of her ex-best friend, seventeen-year-old Holland Briggs assumes her life is over. And it is. But not in the way she thinks.

As Holland learns the truth about her cursed fate—that she is descended from the Beast most have only ever heard of in fairytales—she unites with an unlikely ally, good-looking newcomer Mick Stevenson.

Mick knows more about Holland’s twisted history than she does, and enlightening as it is to learn about, his suggestion for a cure is unsettling at best. Holland must fall in love with Mick in order to break the spell, and save their future generations from repeating her cursed fate. Having sworn off love after the betrayals of her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend, this may be difficult to accomplish.

Complicating things further for Holland and Mick, time runs out, and Holland’s change begins way before schedule. With Holland quickly morphing into a dangerous mythical creature, Mick struggles to save her.

Should they fail, Holland will be lost to the beast inside her forever.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jessa Russo believes in fairytales, ghosts, and Jake Ryan. She insists mimosas were created for Sundays, and that’s not up for discussion. She’s obsessed with the great city of New Orleans—where she’s collected too many beads to count, eventually married her sweetheart, and visited graveyards they don’t include on maps.

She’s loud, painfully honest, and passionate about living life to the fullest, because she’s seen how abruptly it can be taken away.

What began as a desire for reading and writing young adult paranormal has bled into stories of all kinds. From fantasy to pre-dystopian to erotic contemporary, Jessa’s stories always include romance, though she’s given up on pigeonholing her work into a category or genre box.

Jessa was born and raised in Southern California, and remains there to this day with her husband (a classic car fanatic), their daughter (a Tim Burton superfan), and a Great Dane who thinks he’s the same size as his Chihuahua sister.

ENTWINED, the final installment of Russo’s Ever Trilogy, will be released late 2014, as well as an erotic romance written under a pseudonym. Stay tuned!

MY REVIEW:

Five out of Five Stargates--Out of This World!
I LOVE Beauty and the Beast. It is one of my favorite fairy tales. I love it so much that I refuse to watch it again for fear it might be ruined if watched through adult eyes. But this book is yet another reason not to watch it again. Because Beauty and the Beast probably won't hold up when compared to Divide.

First, I love the characters. I love that Holland is smart enough to know that there is something wrong with her. She can sense something brewing under the surface, and while outsiders might think she has gone all emo, we know the truth. Holland Briggs never stops being Holland Briggs. She only gets better. She's going through a rough time with the curse and the beasty hanging over her head, but she is still smart, strong, stubborn, and witty. I had a few laugh out loud moments with her. Mick is also awesome. He's smitten from the start, which makes their fairy tale all the more believable. He isn't just some guy destined to help a gal out of a curse--he is THE guy for Holland, and you really see that as their relationship builds. He doesn't just worship her like some stereotypical Prince Charming swooping in to save the day, but matches her completely and goes toe to toe with her stubborn ass time and time again. I'd love to go on and on about everyone--Cam, Rosemarie (LOVE her!), and even Donovan, but I'm going to quell the obsessive fangirl side of me.

Jessa Russo is an amazing writer, which I already knew after reading EVER, so I am not all that surprised to say she has hit another home run with DIVIDE. It is fast paced with compelling characters and an ingenious twist on a fairy tale close to my heart. My only complaint is that there isn't room left for a sequel. You might normally think that is a good thing, but I would love to spend more time with these characters. I'm comforted in knowing that Jessa has a long and successful career ahead of her with many more books to ease this book addict's needs. =D

About the Author:
Anne Hope is the author of emotionally intense romances with a twist—a twist of humor, a twist of
suspense, a twist of magic. All her stories, however, have a common thread. Whether they make you laugh
or cry or push you to the edge of your seat, they all feature the redeeming power of love and the heart's
incredible ability to heal.

Anne's passion for writing began at the age of eight. After penning countless stories about enchanted
houses, alien girls with supernatural powers, and children constantly getting lost in the woods, she decided to try her hand at romance.

She lives in Montreal, Canada, with her husband, her two inexhaustible kids, a lazy cat and a rambunctious Australian Kelpie.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW
ADRIAN FROM SOUL THIEF AND SOUL CHASE

Reporter from Fallen Angels Magazine: Hello, Adrian. I’m so glad you agreed to speak with me today.

Adrian: Silence.

Reporter: (Clears her throat nervously) What can you tell me about the floods that have been sweeping across North America in the past few months? Some conspiracy theorists believe it’s a sign that the end is near.

Adrian: Then they would be right.

Reporter: Wow, thanks for not sugarcoating it for me. (Takes a deep breath). So how do we stop it?

Adrian: You don’t. We do.

Reporter: We?

Adrian: (A brief hesitation) The Watchers.

Reporter: Tell me a bit about them. What’s it like for an ex-Rogue to join such an elite group of warriors? Is your leader, Cal, as fearsome as everyone claims he is?

Adrian: Cal can be…intense. He and I, we have history. He spent decades hunting me, using Marcus to do his dirty work.

Reporter: Isn’t Marcus your father?

Adrian: Technically, but we were enemies long before we learned how to be friends. We’re still working on the father-son thing. That’s going to take some time. (A humorless chortle) Which is pretty ironic, since we’re just about out of time.

Reporter: Why did the Watchers hunt you? Is it because they didn’t approve of your lifestyle?

Adrian: (Raises a sardonic brow) My lifestyle?

Reporter: (Shifts weight uncomfortably) From what I understand, you’re somewhat of a legend in the Nephilim world. The way I hear it, you once hunted criminals, willing them to kill themselves and then feasting on their souls.
Adrian: That was a very long time ago.

Reporter: Why did you do it?

Adrian: (A deep, unsettling pause) Some souls are diseased. There is no cure, no way to fix them. If they are not extinguished, they will be reborn—over and over again—bringing chaos and death year after year, century after century. At the time, I believed I was doing the world a favor.

Reporter: What changed your mind?

Adrian: (The first embers of emotion flicker in his eyes) I found her, my soul mate. She convinced me everyone deserves a second chance. Even me. Now I leave justice to the legal system.

Reporter: So you did a complete one-eighty, started recruiting Rogues and domesticating them, proving that even the soulless can be redeemed.

Adrian: How do you know about that?

Reporter: Every Rogue in the country has heard whispers of your secret community. You’re a bit of an urban legend among our kind.

Adrian: Some secret. (The corners of his mouth twitch with amusement) I thought I did a better job covering my tracks.

Reporter: Word has a way of getting around, like the rumors about the Sacred Four. What can you tell me about them?

Adrian: Nothing much. If I do, Cal will have my head.

Reporter: Is it true? Do these souls have the power to stop the coming Apocalypse?

Adrian: Cal seems to think so.

Reporter: And you don’t?

Adrian: Not sure. I’ve never put much stock in prophecies.

Reporter: And if Cal is right, if the prophecy is real, what does that imply for the Nephilim?

Adrian: Honestly? (All humor vanishes from his features) If the prophecy is false, then the flood will kill us all. If it’s true... (He shakes his head regretfully) Hell, if I know.

Reporter: So what you’re saying is, we could be screwed either way.

Adrian: I never said that.

Reporter: You implied it.

Adrian: Did I?

Reporter: (Exhales in exasperation) Do you ever give a girl a straight answer?

Adrian: (Flashes a wicked smile) Not if I can help it.

Warning! Spoilers for the rest of the series below! And some really awesome covers too! =D

Save her life…or save mankind. His choice could cost him his soul.

His partner, Regan, is his exact opposite, an enigma he longs to solve. A free spirit and reckless to a fault, Regan acts first and thinks later. Her smart mouth and tender heart have fascinated Marcus for decades, but the Watchers’ strict vow of celibacy has forced him to ignore the sizzling attraction between them. Until now.
When Regan goes rogue to protect a very special little boy, Marcus is forced to make an impossible choice—commit an act of treason or watch the woman he secretly loves die.

Hunted by enemies and allies alike, Regan and Marcus run for their lives, fighting to thwart an age-old prophecy and guard a boy whose destiny may very well be to destroy the world…or save it.

Warning: Contains violent battle scenes, angels with twisted agendas, nail-biting suspense, intense emotion, burning-hot sexual tension, and a sexy, stubborn hero who would rather face death than admit what’s in his heart.
